This Temporary World
This Temporary World
“For we know that if the tent that is our earthly home is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.”
2 Corinthians 5:1
Being an Ambassador means that you understand that this earth is temporary. The Ambassador sets his focus on his future hope in Christ. The Ambassador looks not to the things of this world, but instead anchors his sights on the things that are above.
Jonathan Edwards, a man who is known as the last of the Puritans, said this, “Lord God, stamp eternity on my eyeballs.” May this be our focus as we are raising this next generation for the Glory of God.
In 2 Corinthians 5:1, Paul makes it clear that our eternal home is in the heavens. Jesus said that He has gone to prepare a place for you and for me. He has gone to prepare a place for His Bride. This is where our eternal home is! What we are looking at right now is simply a temporary tent. But just because it is temporary does not mean that it doesn’t have a purpose. We still have a purpose for being here! That is why Paul struggled so much by saying, “to live is Christ and to die is gain.” He was saying that it would be much better for him to just go ahead and die and be with Christ. But he still had a purpose in being here on this earth. God was not done with him. He was still living his life as an Ambassador for Christ on this temporary earth!
Just like Paul, we have purpose. You have a purpose! Yes, this world, this earth, this body is temporary. But that doesn’t mean that it is pointless. You have a purpose. And our purpose is Paul’s whole point in writing this section. Our purpose is to be Ambassadors for Christ. Your purpose is not to live your “best life now.” You could say, “Yeah sure. I agree! This life is temporary! We are here today and gone the next! You only get one life to live! So, I am going to live it up.” But Christian, please understand that it is only by God’s grace that you are living and breathing. It is only by God’s grace that you are here today. It is only by God’s grace that you have been given the gift of faith to submit to the Lordship of Jesus Christ.
God has specifically and intentionally placed you on this earth. And it is not for your own satisfaction. It is for His Glory!
