The Ambassador Lifestyle
13 The Lord looks down from heaven;
he sees all the children of man;
14 from where he sits enthroned he looks out
on all the inhabitants of the earth,
15 he who fashions the hearts of them all
and observes all their deeds.
16 The king is not saved by his great army;
a warrior is not delivered by his great strength.
17 The war horse is a false hope for salvation,
and by its great might it cannot rescue.
We continue through this Psalm with the understanding that the Lord our God is totally sovereign. He is in total control. Let us not forget this. His sovereignty rules and reigns in every aspect of every element of every part of life. As R.C. Sproul said, "There is no maverick molecule."
Focus in on the significance of verses 16 and 17.
𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘀𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗺𝘆. A lot of times a person will think that if they just hang around godly people, then that will be their "checkbox" for righteousness. We understand here in this statement made by the psalmist, that it does not matter how great of an army of people you have around you, there is no Justification in this.
𝗔 𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵. Other people try to get to heaven with their own doing. This could be by "righteous" works. This could be by doing good deeds. This could be by being a "nice person." And this is also done when someone tries to know ABOUT God without trusting Him personally. The psalmist makes it clear that there is no Justification for any of these works of "great strength."
𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝗿 𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘀𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗳𝗮𝗹𝘀𝗲 𝗵𝗼𝗽𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝗮𝗹𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. Other people seek the wrong identity in salvation. Right now we have people in our country who are putting their hope and trust in a political party. Their joy, their delight, their daily mood is based upon the politics of the day. These people have hitched their wagon to a war horse that does not offer Justification.
The only hope that we have is in Christ Alone. Every part of your life should flow from that Faith. Often times, we as "American Christians" get this idea backwards. For instance, we fall in love with politics and then wave the flag of "I believe in God" as a tag-along to our lifestyle. Or we will live our life in whatever way that we want to live, but we make sure to attend church on Sunday morning, so that we can make sure to touch base with God before the week begins. This concept is backwards.
Instead, it should be your Faith in Christ Alone which overflows into every piece of your life. It should be your love for Christ which shapes your mind and heart for the governing of a people group. It should be your love for Christ which shapes your mind and heart to lead your employees and run your business. It should be your love for Christ which shapes your mind and heart to submit to authority. It should be your love for Christ which shapes your mind and heart to desire a Godly community of people who are devoted to one another.
We serve the Sovereign King of the Universe. If you are a believer in Christ, then you are an Ambassador for this King. You serve the King in a foreign land as an Ambassador. This is your full-time occupation -- an Ambassador for Christ. Everything else in your life should flow from that fact.
Stop making God your lifestyle tag-along when it is convenient to raise that flag. Allow your passion and zeal and love for Christ to overflow into the way you love your spouse, and the way you deal with your customers, and the way you communicate with others and the way you read about the politics of the day.
Christ Alone. Nothing else actually matters.
