Delivered from Darkness, Transferred to the Kingdom | Colossians 1:3-14, part 3

Introduction
Up to this point, we have seen what the gospel produces and how the believer is to walk.
In Part 1, we saw the marks of a real gospel work—faith in Christ, love for the saints, and hope laid up in heaven.

In Part 2, we saw how to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord—being filled with the knowledge of His will, bearing fruit, being strengthened, and giving thanks.

But now we must ask the most important question:
  • Why is any of this possible at all?
  • Why can a sinner bear fruit?
  • Why can a dead man walk?
  • Why can a rebellious heart love God?

Paul answers that question by grounding everything in what God has already done. Before he tells you what to do, he reminds you what God has done. And if you miss this, you will turn the Christian life into legalism.

If you try to bear fruit without understanding redemption, you will become exhausted.
If you try to walk worthy without understanding grace, you will become prideful or defeated.
If you try to please God without understanding salvation, you will misunderstand everything.

So Paul anchors it here: “He has delivered us… He has transferred us… in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.”

This is the foundation.

Exposition
Paul writes:

“giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light. He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.”
—Colossians 1:12–14

Notice immediately: Everything here is God’s action, not yours.

1) God Has Qualified You

“who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light”

This is staggering. You did not qualify yourself. You were not morally improved into qualification. You were not spiritually disciplined into qualification. You were not intellectually advanced into qualification. God qualified you.

That word matters because of the false teaching Paul is confronting. There were those saying:

  • “You’re not spiritual enough.”

  • “You haven’t denied yourself enough.”

  • “You haven’t had the right experiences.”

  • “You’re not at the higher level.”

And Paul responds: God is the one who determines qualification—not man.

And what are the qualifications? Not your works. Not your performance. But this:

  • Christ has taken your sin

  • Christ has given you His righteousness

That is it. Qualified.

2) You Have an Inheritance

“to share in the inheritance of the saints in light”

This is not just future. Yes, there is a future inheritance—eternal life, glory, the presence of Christ. But there is also present inheritance. Right now, you have:

  • Access to God

  • Freedom from sin’s dominion

  • The indwelling Spirit

  • The ability to grow in holiness

The unbeliever does not have this. He is still enslaved. Still blind. Still bound to darkness.

But the believer has been brought into light. Light means clarity. Light means truth. Light means no confusion.

God is not the author of confusion. So if you are living in constant confusion, darkness, and deception—something is wrong. Because in Christ, you have been brought into light.

3) You Have Been Delivered

“He has delivered us from the domain of darkness”

This is not partial. This is not gradual. This is decisive. You were not slightly influenced by darkness. You were under its domain.

That means:

  • You were ruled by sin

  • You were governed by the world

  • You were enslaved to your flesh

  • And you could not free yourself

But God delivered you. Not assisted you. Not helped you escape. Delivered you.

This is to rescue. You were not sick—you were captive. And God broke in and brought you out.

4) You Have Been Transferred

“and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son”

This is just as important as deliverance. Because salvation is not just leaving something—it is being brought into something. You were removed from darkness… and placed into Christ’s kingdom.

That means:
  • New authority
  • New allegiance
  • New identity

You are no longer under the rule of sin. You are under the rule of Christ. That is why the Christian life must change. Because your kingdom has changed.

5) You Have Redemption

“in whom we have redemption”

Redemption means purchase. A price was paid. You were not freed cheaply. You were bought.

And what was the price? The blood of Christ. He took your sin. He absorbed God’s wrath. He satisfied divine justice. And because of that, you are free.

6) You Have Forgiveness

“the forgiveness of sins”

Not partial forgiveness. Not probationary forgiveness. Not conditional forgiveness.

Complete forgiveness.

Your sins are not managed—they are removed. They are not minimized—they are dealt with. They are not overlooked—they are paid for.

And because of that: You stand clean before God.

Doctrinal Clarity
There are a few particular points that we need to make unmistakably clear.

1) Salvation Is Entirely the Work of God
There are no exceptions. "All this is from God..." (2 Corinthians 5:18)
  • God qualifies
  • God delivers
  • God transfers
  • Christ redeems
  • God forgives

There is no room for human boasting.

2) You Cannot Be Disqualified If You Are in Christ
False teaching says: “You’re not enough.”

The gospel says: Christ is enough.

If your standing depends on you—you will always be unstable.

If your standing depends on Christ—you are secure.

3) Salvation Is Both Deliverance and Transfer
You are not just saved from something. You are saved into something. And that means your life must reflect your new kingdom.

4) Redemption Is Costly
Your salvation is free to you. But it was not cheap. It cost the life of the Son of God.

Application
This passage convicts us deeply into how we live. And without taking this conviction and applying it to our lives, then it is useless guilt.

1) Stop Living Like You’re Still in Darkness
You have been delivered. So why live like you’re still enslaved? Why entertain sin as if it still owns you? Why speak as if you have no power to change? Why live as though Christ has not won victory?

You are no longer under that domain.

2) Stop Grounding Your Assurance in Yourself
If your assurance rises and falls with your performance, you have misunderstood the gospel.

Your confidence is not: “I’m doing well.”

Your confidence is: “Christ has done everything.”

3) Live Like You Belong to Another Kingdom
You have been transferred. So your life should look different.
  • Your priorities
  • Your desires
  • Your decisions
  • Your relationships

Everything is now shaped by a different King.

4) Give Thanks
Paul begins this section with: “giving thanks to the Father”

Why? Because everything you have is from Him. If you are not thankful, you are not thinking clearly about salvation.

Gospel Anchor
Everything we have seen in this passage comes down to one reality: You did not save yourself. God did.

Through Christ:
  • You were qualified
  • You were delivered
  • You were transferred
  • You were redeemed
  • You were forgiven

That is the gospel. And that is why the Christian life is not about earning favor. It is about living in response to grace.

You do not bear fruit to become alive. You bear fruit because you are alive.

You do not walk worthy to be accepted. You walk worthy because you have been accepted.

You do not strive to enter the kingdom. You strive because you are already in the kingdom.

Conclusion
The question is not: “Am I doing enough?”

The question is: “Am I living in light of what God has done?”

You have been delivered from darkness. You have been transferred into Christ’s kingdom. You have been redeemed. You have been forgiven.

So now:
  • Bear fruit
  • Be strengthened
  • Give thanks

And walk in a manner worthy of the Lord—because He has already made you His.
