10 Marks of Sanctification | Psalm 119:169-176
10 Marks of Sanctification
According to Psalm 119:169-176
Psalm 119 does not leave the Christian life undefined. It shows you what it looks like when someone has been changed. Because the Christian life is not static—it is marked by change.
Your life should not look the same as it did before Christ. There should be a distinguishable difference in:
Sanctification is that change.
Justification is like being hit by a semi-truck. Sanctification is what happens after.
When someone gets hit by a semi-truck, you don’t have to wonder if something happened. You can see it. They walk different. They look different. They live different.
And when someone is saved by the power of God, their life should look different.
If there is no change, there is no salvation.
That’s not harsh—that’s biblical.
And Psalm 119:169-176 gives us something incredibly helpful: It gives us marks. Signs. Evidence.
Your life should not look the same as it did before Christ. There should be a distinguishable difference in:
- How you think
- How you act
- How you respond
- How you make decisions
Sanctification is that change.
Justification is like being hit by a semi-truck. Sanctification is what happens after.
When someone gets hit by a semi-truck, you don’t have to wonder if something happened. You can see it. They walk different. They look different. They live different.
And when someone is saved by the power of God, their life should look different.
If there is no change, there is no salvation.
That’s not harsh—that’s biblical.
And Psalm 119:169-176 gives us something incredibly helpful: It gives us marks. Signs. Evidence.

Old Hebrew writing for tav (22nd letter in the alphabet)
This final stanza, built on the Hebrew letter that means mark or sign, shows us what it looks like when God’s signature is on a life.
This letter (as seen above) is where we get the phrase "X marks the spot." This was a mark. This was the signature that men would use when they were to "make their mark."
And so, this stanza becomes the evidence, the proof, the signature of God on the life of a true follower of Christ. When someone looks at your life, they should say, "X marks the spot" in finding you guilty of being an authentic disciple of Christ.
This stanza leads you to ask one question: Is God’s signature on my life?
10 Marks of Sanctification
1. Devoted to Understanding
This is not a desire for knowledge. This is a desire for understanding. There is a difference.
You can know the truth and still not be saved. But you cannot truly understand the truth apart from the work of the Spirit.
The progression is clear:
A sanctified person is not satisfied with information. They want clarity. They want to understand what is true. And they want that understanding to come from one place: the Word of God.
2. Desperate for Deliverance
This is not: “Get me out of trouble.”
And it is not: “Remove me from hardship.”
This is: “Deliver me from myself.”
Deliver me from my sin.
Deliver me from my selfishness.
Deliver me from my ways.
A sanctified person does not just want relief. They want transformation. They want to be conformed to the image of Christ.
3. Private Worship
This is not public. This is private. This is what happens when no one is watching.
Private worship is the result of trusting biblical doctrine.
When you truly believe the Word, you don’t need an audience to worship. You don’t need recognition. You don’t need a stage.
Your lips pour forth praise because your heart has been shaped by truth.
4. Public Worship
Now it becomes visible. This is not forced. This is not manufactured.
Public worship is the result of a life of obedience.
When you have walked with God all week…
When you have seen His faithfulness…
When you have obeyed His Word…
You don’t come into the gathering empty. You come ready to worship. Because you have something real to say.
5. Daily Obedience
This is not occasional obedience. This is daily. Step-by-step. Moment-by-moment.
Sanctification is synergistic: God works and you respond
You are not a robot. The Spirit convicts. You obey.
Daily obedience means: I take the next right step.
Not all the steps. Just the next one.
6. Delightful Obedience
This is where many people get it wrong.
They think obedience is: “I don’t want to do this, but I will anyway.”
That’s not sanctification. That’s legalism.
God is not after your feet. He is after your heart.
Delightful obedience flows from:
And then—obedience comes naturally.
A heart that loves God loves to please God.
7. Sustained Satisfaction
This is ongoing. Not a moment. Not an emotional high.
Sustained satisfaction.
“I have Christ—and I want Him more.”
That is sanctification. Not moving past Christ… But going deeper into Him.
8. Surrendered Submission
This is: Not my will, but Yours.
God’s commands are not burdens.
They are good. They are right. They are for your good and His glory.
A sanctified person does not resist God’s authority. They submit to it.
9. Recognizing the Need for Humility
After everything… After 175 verses…
The psalmist says: “I have gone astray.”
That is the mark of maturity. Not pride. Not arrival. But humility.
You haven’t made it. You still need grace. You still need help. You still need to be corrected.
10. Remembering the Expectation
This is the standard.
Love the Lord your God with:
The psalmist says:
“I know what is right. I remember it. I failed—and I need to be brought back.”
This is the expectation. This is the standard. This is the path.
A Final Word
These are the marks. Not suggestions. Not ideals. Marks. Evidence.
These are signs that God’s signature is on your life.
So the question is not: “Do I claim to be a Christian?”
The question is: Do I see these marks in my life?
Because your life is a testimony of:
And your life should be: The X that marks the spot for others to see Christ.
The Solution
If these marks are weak… If they are missing…
There is a simple solution: Go back to the Word.
Not to know more. But to understand.
Know the truth. Understand the truth. Walk wisely in the truth. Apply the truth. And God will shape your life.
The Gospel
And don’t miss this: You don’t earn this.
Christ already secured it.
He:
And He died for those who did.
So now: You are not striving for acceptance. You are living from it.
The Charge
Live a life where it is obvious that God’s signature is on you.
Because that is what sanctification looks like. And that is what Psalm 119 demands.
This letter (as seen above) is where we get the phrase "X marks the spot." This was a mark. This was the signature that men would use when they were to "make their mark."

10 Marks of Sanctification
1. Devoted to Understanding
“Give me understanding according to your word” (Psalm 119:169)
This is not a desire for knowledge. This is a desire for understanding. There is a difference.
You can know the truth and still not be saved. But you cannot truly understand the truth apart from the work of the Spirit.
The progression is clear:
- Knowledge

This is not: “Get me out of trouble.”
And it is not: “Remove me from hardship.”
This is: “Deliver me from myself.”
Deliver me from my sin.
Deliver me from my selfishness.
Deliver me from my ways.
A sanctified person does not just want relief. They want transformation. They want to be conformed to the image of Christ.
3. Private Worship
“My lips will pour forth praise” (Psalm 119:171)
This is not public. This is private. This is what happens when no one is watching.
Private worship is the result of trusting biblical doctrine.
When you truly believe the Word, you don’t need an audience to worship. You don’t need recognition. You don’t need a stage.
Your lips pour forth praise because your heart has been shaped by truth.
4. Public Worship
“My tongue will sing of your word” (Psalm 119:172)
Now it becomes visible. This is not forced. This is not manufactured.
Public worship is the result of a life of obedience.
When you have walked with God all week…
When you have seen His faithfulness…
When you have obeyed His Word…
You don’t come into the gathering empty. You come ready to worship. Because you have something real to say.
5. Daily Obedience
“I have chosen your precepts” (Psalm 119:173)
This is not occasional obedience. This is daily. Step-by-step. Moment-by-moment.
Sanctification is synergistic: God works and you respond
You are not a robot. The Spirit convicts. You obey.
Daily obedience means: I take the next right step.
Not all the steps. Just the next one.
6. Delightful Obedience
“Your law is my delight” (Psalm 119:174)
This is where many people get it wrong.
They think obedience is: “I don’t want to do this, but I will anyway.”
That’s not sanctification. That’s legalism.
God is not after your feet. He is after your heart.
Delightful obedience flows from:
- Loving God with your heart
- Being satisfied in Him with your soul
- Understanding truth with your mind
And then—obedience comes naturally.
A heart that loves God loves to please God.
7. Sustained Satisfaction
“Let my soul live and praise you” (Psalm 119:175)
This is ongoing. Not a moment. Not an emotional high.
Sustained satisfaction.
“I have Christ—and I want Him more.”
That is sanctification. Not moving past Christ… But going deeper into Him.
8. Surrendered Submission
“Let your rules help me” (Psalm 119:175)
This is: Not my will, but Yours.
God’s commands are not burdens.
They are good. They are right. They are for your good and His glory.
A sanctified person does not resist God’s authority. They submit to it.
9. Recognizing the Need for Humility
“I have gone astray like a lost sheep” (Psalm 119:176)
After everything… After 175 verses…
The psalmist says: “I have gone astray.”
That is the mark of maturity. Not pride. Not arrival. But humility.
You haven’t made it. You still need grace. You still need help. You still need to be corrected.
10. Remembering the Expectation
“I do not forget your commandments” (Psalm 119:176)
This is the standard.
Love the Lord your God with:
- All your heart
- All your soul
- All your mind
- All your strength
The psalmist says:
“I know what is right. I remember it. I failed—and I need to be brought back.”
This is the expectation. This is the standard. This is the path.
A Final Word
These are the marks. Not suggestions. Not ideals. Marks. Evidence.
These are signs that God’s signature is on your life.
So the question is not: “Do I claim to be a Christian?”
The question is: Do I see these marks in my life?
Because your life is a testimony of:
- God’s power
- God’s grace
- The sufficiency of Scripture
- The reality of transformation
And your life should be: The X that marks the spot for others to see Christ.
The Solution
If these marks are weak… If they are missing…
There is a simple solution: Go back to the Word.
Not to know more. But to understand.
Know the truth. Understand the truth. Walk wisely in the truth. Apply the truth. And God will shape your life.
The Gospel
And don’t miss this: You don’t earn this.
Christ already secured it.
He:
- Understood perfectly
- Obeyed completely
- Never wandered
And He died for those who did.
So now: You are not striving for acceptance. You are living from it.
The Charge
Live a life where it is obvious that God’s signature is on you.
Because that is what sanctification looks like. And that is what Psalm 119 demands.
