2026: Rethinking Athletics #4
In this episode of the “Rethinking Athletics” series, we turn our attention to one of the most influential people in youth sports: the parent.
Most parents genuinely love their children and want what is best for them. However, love without biblical wisdom can unintentionally create pressure, instability and unhealthy priorities. This episode explores the difference between raising athletes and raising disciples, and why that distinction changes everything.
Through biblical reflection and practical application, we discuss:
-Why God called parents to raise disciples, not merely athletes
-How parental identity often becomes tied to a child's performance
-The dangers of fear-driven parenting in youth sports
-Teaching children how to fail biblically
-The importance of respecting and submitting to authority
-How parents shape their children's view of coaches, officials and leadership
-And how athletics can become a powerful tool for discipleship when properly ordered
Athletics is never just athletics. It is training, formation and discipleship. This episode challenges parents to examine what youth sports is producing in their homes and calls them to use athletics as a tool for raising mature young men and women who love Christ, respect authority and live for the Glory of God.
